Description
The goal is to create a 2D side-scroller game which takes place in the Mistborn universe. The user will play the role of a young mistborn learning his/her allomantic abilities in order to solve puzzles and pass levels of increasing difficulty. The game should start simple by introducing the character to a single new element or ability at a time. By the end, the levels should be fairly difficult but the user should feel that they're able to pair together the abilities that they've previously learned to solve these complex puzzles.
Gameplay Dynamics
Allomatic Abilities and their in-game influence:
Iron (Lurcher)
Abilities:
- Pull on nearby metals. Depending on weight of Mistborn and the metal item…either the Mistborn is pulled towards the metal source or the metal source is pulled towards the Mistborn.
Possible Game play examples:
- Pull the character up in the air towards metal
- Pull a metal lever that is on the other side of a wall
- Pull coin attacks from enemies towards themselves
Steel (Coinshot)####
Abilities:
- Push on nearby metals. Depending on weight of Mistborn and the metal item…either the Mistborn is pushed away the metal source or the metal source is pushed away the Mistborn.
Possible Game play examples:
- Push the character up in the air away from metal
- Push a metal button that is on the other side of a wall
- Push coins towards an enemy as an attack
Tin (Tineye)
Abilities:
- Enhance their senses (sight, hearing, etc).
- If, while burning Tin, a loud noise or bright light appears…it stuns Mistborn
Possible Game play examples:
- Can see through Mists that are covering an objective (like a switch, button, etc)
- Can see more clearly in near-darkness
- Can hear enemies from a farther distance and avoid them (for a stealth approach)
- gives you a long range of vision (zooms out the screen when "flaring it")
- breaks certain status effects (stuns and the like).
- lightens night levels and removes the mist so you can see hidden enemies or objects
Pewter (Thug)
Abilities:
- Enhance physical capabilities. Makes the Mistborn many times stronger (muscles, bones, skin, etc). Grants better balance, speed, and dexterity.
- If carrying a heavy object (or taken a mortal wound), the Mistborn could be crushed or die from the wound because Pewter runs out
Possible Game play examples:
- Can be used to increase jump height (in case there are no metal pieces to push off of)
- Can be used to temporarily increase health
- Can be used to run faster
- Can be used to take less damage from enemies or when falling from a great distance
- Can be used to pick up a heavy rock that is blocking the path – careful not to get crushed if you run out of pewter while carrying the rock
Zinc (Rioter)
Abilities:
- Inflames the emotions of anyone nearby by making the more prone to hasty decisions. Can affect an individual target or a small group
Possible Game play examples:
- Can be used to make an enemy attack his friends
- Can make Skaa more vocal about their disagreement with the Lord Ruler – this creates a distraction for the Mistborn to sneak by
Brass (Soother)
Abilities:
- Soothes the emotions of anyone nearby. Makes them more calm and thoughtful in their actions. Can be used to guide someone towards a goal. Can affect an individual target or a small group
Possible Game play examples:
- Can be used to have an enemy flip a switch for you by guiding them towards the idea
- Can calm a group of angry Skaa to prevent them from being slaughtered by guards (possible moral choices in this game?)
Copper (Smoker)
Abilities:
- Creates a ‘cloud’ that prevents other Mistborn from seeing that they are burning metals. Becomes immune to Rioting/Soothing. This cloud can be pierced by someone extremely strong in Seeking (Inquisitor).
Possible Game play examples:
- Use this metal to hide your powers from nearby enemies
- Use this metal to prevent your character and others around you from the influence of enemy Rioters/Soothers
- Doesn't alert seekers to you while using other skills.
Bronze (Seeker)
Abilities:
- Can determine if someone else is burning metals. Can figure out the location of someone burning metals and which metal they are burning. An extremely powerful Seeker can pierce the cloud of a Smoker.
Possible Game play examples:
- Can be used to guide the Mistborn towards someone who is constantly burning a metal (maybe a level that the player needs to locate a Mistborn who is captured/injured?)
- Can be used to find a player that is burning a particular metal (maybe a level that the player has to find a Misting/Mistborn that is burning a particular metal?)
- Bronze alerts you to mistings and mistborn nearby and places a colored "vibration" marker over them to show what metal they are burning.
Puzzle Ideas
- Pushing/pulling on cannonball shots to redirect them to break through doors or barricades.
- Pushing/Pulling levers not accessible to the player.
- Moving along on a raft which requires pushing and pulling.
- Hide secrets behind cracked boards or walls requiring them to be destroyed to find them.
